ABOUT

a play of our time

Can you hear their voices is a play by hallie flanagan davis and margaret ellen clifford adapted from the short story β€œcan you make out their voices?’ by whittaker chambers.

originally produced at Vassar College in 1931, the play is noted as one of the first political theatre pieces in america. the play also had a run off-broadway in 2010. Now, we will produce the 2025 virtual staged reading.

the short story, and subsequently the play, is based off a news story where farmers in arkansas in 1931 raided a local Red Cross to avoid starvation. the play follows farmers in rural arkansas as they experience the Great Depression and the dust bowl, as well as interjections of scenes showcasing the well-to-do in washington D.C. as time moves on and people become more desperate, what will they be called to do?

our process

this production will be an elevated staged reading rehearsed and produced via zoom and released on youtube. the script will be adapted by the director and cast to fit this modern production.
